Quote: “Resilience is not a character trait; it’s a set of skills.” Mark Black
As professional speakers, we talk a lot about scaling our businesses, landing high-paying gigs, and commanding premium fees, but we rarely talk about the physical baseline required to sustain that level of output. Gruelling travel schedules, high-stakes presentation days, and constant pushing can easily lead to burnout if you aren’t intentionally protecting your greatest asset—your health. On this episode of The Wealthy Speaker Podcast, I am joined by the incredible Mark Black—a heart and double-lung transplant recipient turned marathon runner and CSP—to discuss what it truly takes to build a thriving, sustainable speaking business without sacrificing your well-being. Mark shares his remarkable personal story alongside actionable strategies for managing stamina, setting non-negotiable boundaries on the road, and shifting into a mindset that prioritizes long-term vitality. Grab your pen, because whether you are just getting started or stepping onto global stages, this is a conversation your life and your business both need to hear.
Born with a life-threatening congenital heart defect, Mark underwent two open-heart surgeries before his first birthday. These early challenges defined his childhood and shaped the resilience that would later carry him through the greatest test of his life. By the age of 22, Mark’s health had reached a critical stage, and his doctors told him he would not live to see his 25th birthday without a rare heart and double-lung transplant. This news marked the beginning of a life-changing journey that would redefine his future. In 2002, a donor was found, and he received the transplant that saved his life. Against all odds, he not only survived the surgery but emerged determined to live a life of extraordinary purpose. Less than three years later, Mark became the only person in history to run a marathon with a transplanted heart and lungs. He would go on to complete three more marathons, proving the power of resilience, determination, and human potential.
