When you think about reinvention, you might envision someone like Madonna who has revamped her public persona so many times you have to wonder who the real Madonna even is. No, today, we’re going to talk about reinvention so that you can actually show people your true, authentic self. You’ll find that the more honest you are with yourself, the more willing your audience will be to receive what you’re putting down for them.
In this edition of The Wealthy Speaker Podcast, I’m sitting down with Linda Edgecombe: Hall of Fame speaker, award-winning philanthropist, trainer, and consultant. For over two decades, she’s developed programs that teach professionals how to make powerful (and necessary) shifts in their lives. But that’s not the only thing that makes her the perfect person to speak about reinvention.
Linda herself has undergone a major reinvention. You’ll have to listen to the podcast to hear the story in full, but the basic gist of it goes something like this:
Linda knew that there was something “off” in her life. Sure, she was making people laugh while delivering her speeches, but her heart just wasn’t in it–and her ability to book business was reflective of that (though she didn’t know it at the time). When she could no longer deny what was happening, she stepped away from everything in order to create space. And that was when she was able to discover her authentic self and undergo a much-needed reinvention.
As she explains in the podcast, it’s impossible to speak to an audience if you don’t truly believe in the point you’re trying to sell. When you’re phoning it in, people will take notice and your sales will suffer as a result. So, the lesson for today is to go on stage and be the real you. And if you’re not capable of doing that, if you dread going to your speaking gigs, if you don’t “walk the walk”, then it’s time to stop, reevaluate, and figure out your own reinvention.
