#SpeakerSuccessTip: Whose Recipe are You Following?

#SpeakerSuccessTip: Are You Listening When Your Market Speaks?

I’ve had the great fortune to work with some amazing coaches over the years to help me with my business.  One of them, Lisa Larter, shared an analogy with me about the chocolate chip cookie recipe that really landed.

We were talking about how sometimes our clients have multiple coaches, mentors or classes that they attend, and how loading up on too much information could lead to paralysis.

Too many voices in your head may result in confusion and overwhelm.

Let’s say you want to bake a batch of chocolate chip cookies, and you don’t have a recipe.  You’d go out on the internet and search “best chocolate chip cookie recipe.” You’d gather the ingredients and follow the recipe from start to finish.  Maybe leaving out the nuts or other minor adjustments, but following the recipe for the most part.

You wouldn’t find 3 or 4 recipes and use ingredients from each to piecemeal it together; you’d follow just one recipe, right?

Well, in the speaking business, I’d like to encourage you to choose your recipe and follow it.  If you hire a coach, put on the blinders and follow their formula. Really tune out all of the industry noise, which can get so loud, and work the program laid out for you. And if you find you don’t jive with it, then you move on and search for a new recipe.

I have a few clients right now who are in what I’d call a learners frenzy.  They think, “I’m going to master this business, so I’m going to take every class, read every book, listen to every podcast I can get my hands on, and then they reel in overwhelm not knowing which way to turn.

We know that clarity equals confidence, so here are your steps:

  1. Choose your path/guru/book or formula to follow – if you don’t have a path yet, pick up a copy of The Wealthy Speaker 3.0. We lay out our Ready, Aim, Launch formula quite nicely, if I do say so myself 🙂 .
  2. Tune out the noise.  Stop taking classes and asking people for advice. When you get to a point in your process where you need a deep dive on something topic-specific, i.e., storytelling, then seek out more learning from an expert in that area.  But until then, follow the path you’ve chosen with your blinders on.
  3. Take action.

That’s it.  Focus and take action.  When we choose the path and follow the path, good things happen.

Stay your course, and good things will come.

I’ll see you soon Wealthy Speakers!
